The short answer

Send an Amazon Pay gift card when you want the person to choose almost anything: it covers most of Amazon.in, and many bill payments and partner apps too. Send a Google Play gift card only when you know they want apps, games or subscriptions on an Android phone. Both arrive by email within minutes. Never buy a gift card because a caller or message asks you to pay with one.

How a digital gift card works

You choose an amount, enter the person’s email address or mobile number, and add a short message. Amazon sends them a code. They add it to their own account, and the balance sits there until they spend it.

Nothing is posted, so it works for birthdays you remembered late, staff rewards and relatives in another city.

Amazon Pay gift card: the flexible choice

  • Can be spent on almost anything sold on Amazon.in.
  • The balance can also pay for things like mobile recharges and bills inside Amazon Pay.
  • Has a validity period, shown on the product page, so mention it in your message.
  • Comes in occasion designs, such as birthday, with the same balance.

Google Play gift card: for Android users

A Google Play code adds balance to a Google account. It can pay for apps, games, in-app purchases, eBooks and subscriptions such as YouTube Premium on Android. It cannot be used on an iPhone, and it cannot be spent on Amazon.

Which one to send

  • You do not know what they want: Amazon Pay.
  • A teenager who plays mobile games on Android: Google Play.
  • Office rewards for a mixed team: Amazon Pay, because it works for everyone.
  • Someone with an iPhone: Amazon Pay. Google Play codes will not help them.

Gift card scams to watch for

Gift cards are the payment scammers ask for most, because a code cannot be reversed once it is shared.

  1. No bank, government office, courier or tech-support company will ever ask you to pay with a gift card.
  2. Never read a gift card code out over the phone or send a photo of it to anyone except the person it is for.
  3. Double-check the recipient’s email or number. A code sent to the wrong address is hard to recover.
  4. Buy only from the official Amazon.in listing, not from people reselling codes at a discount.

Tip: Schedule the delivery date when you buy, so the code lands on the birthday morning rather than the day you remembered.
